| 63 | Catherine was a linguist, spoke Russian and was a censor in WW2. She visited Russia but I don't think she was able to find out anything. | Catherine Hodson

|
| 65 | Actual letter from Denys Hodson dated 24 March 2000 Dear Heather, Here is a slightly clearer version of the family tree of our branch. After the first line of names the whole of the rest is the descent of Thomas and Mary. I don't think it's worth your bothering with the Maskews, my grandmother's family, as they are not really part of your kin so I haven't put in anything about them. All my father's generation are dead - my mother who died five years ago was the last of that generation and she was 97. In my father's generation Tom worked all his life in what was then Ceylon as a civil servant; Gerald was in the Navy in both world wars and was decorated for bravery in both; Cyril, Rex & Harold were Church of England Parsons. Cyril did not serve in the first world war but went out as a photographer with General Denikin's White Russian army just after (another Russian connection!). Rex & Harold were in Queensland, Australia as what were called Bush Brothers (a sort of Mounted Priest) just before WW1. Rex became a naval Chaplin and Harold won a Military Cross for rescuing wounded under fire. Kit, the only girl, married first the man Two commanded Scott;s ship on his last journey to the Antarctic. She was a linguist and in the WW2 she was a censor. She spoke Russian and tried to find traces of our family in Russia but at the peak of the Soviet regime we think she didn't get very far. Charles was the successful one, he too won a Military Cross in WW1 and was twice wounded. He became the youngest High Court Judge of his time and ended up in the House of Lords. As you can see we are a pretty dull lot....... I have sent off to Southport to try to trace Fergus. If I feel energetic enough I might try to trace the one who was Town Clerk of Stockport since he seems to be the one who traced the Hodson of Hodson's Horse connection. Love Denys (Hodson) | Denys Hodson

| 68 | Harold went out to Queensland Australia with Rex(Reginald) as Mounted Priests. Harold joined the Army enlisted originally as a private in the Australian Army. Harold won a Military Cross for rescuing wounded under fire. | Harold Victor Hodson

| 73 | Dad(Joseph Maskew) died Sept. 1934 right before my High School graduation. Grandma(Ellen Hughes) died, to the best of my knowledge, very shortly thereafter, before the end of the year. No divorce, Catholics didn't divorce back then, remember. Grandpa Weppler didn't last long after Grandma's death but we had no connections with him. He was a boastful man, strongly built who handled would be muggers of his Hill district. To hear him tell it, he was "respected". Unfortuneatly Jake(his brother Jacob Maskew) had problems - women & booze. Mildred died young probably in her early 40's. I really didn't know. As I implied the divorce was Jakes's behaviour. When your in town a telephone call may clear up some questions. Ellen was born in Ireland & worked in England. Sorry for the hard writing. | 111 | The original entry was located in Kendal, Westmoreland, Bishop's transcripts. The entry listed Alexander as the son of Margaret, she being a spinster (meaning she was single). It said he was born 22nd March 1809. This matches the previos information on him. Although Alexander was illegitimate, his father's name may be Alexander Sinclair (a scottish name) because of cases of illegitimacy, it was common to name the boy after the father with the middle name being the father's last name. Baptised 22 August 1809 Kendal Westmorland. The register dates from 1558, and, except from the years 1644 to 1658, is perfect and in good preservation and contains some curious memoranda. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £350, including 208 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1891 by t five bays, aisles, west porch and a low central tower, with pyramidal roof, containing one bell: the interior of the church was decorated about 1884 at the expense of the Rev. C. R. Ball M.A. vicar 1869-86: a stained east window was erected in 1892: there are 500 sittings. The register dates from the year 1868. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £281, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Arthur Fairclough Maskew M.A. of the University of Oxford. The Lord's Day Observance Society and Sunday Sport 1834-1914 Dennis Brailsford University of Birmingham The Lord's Day Observance Society, henceforth LDOS, the first long standing single subject pressure group, exerted considerable if spasmodic influence on aspects of sport and recreation through the nineteenth century. Trading was its first anathema, but Sunday play was not far behind. Given full access to the Society's records and, with all disputes aver Sunday sport effectively over, now seems a good moment to review the whole process through the Society's eyes in its minute books. This has been possible only through the cooperation of the Society's officers and the generous help of its .... Minute Book VII 1882-1893 452 5 January 1892, Protest sent to Rev. A Maskew against his advice to Sunday cyclists.20 20 The likelihood is that the Rev Maskew was adopting a tolerant attitude towards Sunday cyclists so long as they combined their recreation with church attendance. It is clear from the records of cycling clubs that there was both frequent criticism of their Sunday activities and a firm defence of their freedom by the clubs themselves and an assurance that their time tables always left space for church services. The honorary secretary of the Malvern Cycling Club, for instance, was assuring the local press that on their Easter and Whitsuntide tours they made `ample provision for the attendance at Divine Service for those members who desire to attend.' Reply from a letter I sent to Joseph T. Maskew, December, 1998. John, Nice to hear from you. Dad(Joseph Maskew) died Sept. Unfortunately Jake(his brother Jacob Maskew) had problems - women & booze. Mildred died young probably in her early 40's. I really didn't know.
